Pat Bean

I am a textile artist living in Mawdesley Lancashire and first became interested in textiles at secondary school. When I retired early from teaching in 2001, I joined the Embroiderers Guild and after many day courses began studying City and Guild's stitched textiles, gaining the Diploma in 2009.

I find inspiration from many sources but especially through the vibrancy of colour in the natural world. I am a keen gardener and this gives me a never ending supply of ideas. Travelling to incredible areas of the world is also inspirational with special visits to Peru and the Galapagos Islands, India, Africa, Australia and Canada….. quite a lot of sketch books! I find these essential as a design tool but also to document holidays… per country! Photography is a large part of this too, so I have recently embarked on courses to improve my skills in this area.

I love working with texture and often combine natural fibres such as wool, silk and paper with distorted layers of synthetic fabrics. The addition of hand and machine stitch gives an extra dimension to my work. I often embroider onto hand- made felt (wet felted ) and am a member of the International Felt makers Association and the "Fellside Felters" group.
